CLAN Frequently Asked Questions

What is broadband from Lochwinnoch CLAN?
Our broadband service is a new technology based on wireless networking that provides you with high-speed access (up to 20 times faster than dial up) to the internet, therefore you can surf all day without blocking your telephone line. CLAN is a 'not for profit' community group.

How much will it cost?
The initial cost will be £25 per month plus a one-off setup fee of between £70 and £150.

How do I pay?
You will be required to set up a monthly standing order for the monthly subscription.

How does broadband from Lochwinnoch CLAN work?
A wireless card on your PC transmits data to one of the village base stations. From there we collect the data and transport it via satellite onto the internet.

As it is a wireless network does that mean my computer will not have to be physically plugged into a connection?
Theoretically no but in some instances you will require an outside antenna if signal strength indoors in insufficient for a good quality connection, this will connect to your PC.

What speeds can I expect from broadband?
In Lochwinnoch we will be providing internet access at as much as 2,000Kbps, that’s four times as fast as ADSL broadband services.

What is ADSL?
ADSL – Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line, is the broadband service currently provided by ISP’s via a telephone line. Typical download speeds are up to 500Kbps and upload speeds are up to 256Kbps compared with up to 2000Kbps download, 512Kbps upload from our broadband service.

What is the minimum specification I need for my PC?
You will require Windows 98se as the minimum operating system, Windows ME, 2000, and XP are also acceptable. If you are a desktop PC owner then you will need to have at least one free PCI slot on your computer. If you are a laptop user you will require a Type II or Type III CardBus interface for the network card

How will broadband help my business?
Having a faster internet connection can help your business in a variety of ways, from saving you money to helping you serve your customers more effectively. Faster access to a vast array of information that can be downloaded in considerably less time will save you money. It can also enable you to access a range of services available from your suppliers that may not be available using traditional methods.

Are there any problems or risks I should be aware of if I use broadband?
There are no serious problems in transferring to our broadband, however, as with any broadband service, if you are permanently connected to the internet, you are increasing the risk of attacks from hackers and software viruses. By being aware of this and taking preventative actions such as installing suitable firewall and anti-virus software, you can manage the risk and reduce the likelihood of attack on your computer.

If I subscribe will I be charged for the time that I spend browsing the internet or sending e-mail?
No, our broadband operates on an always-on basis, so you can use it as much as you like for a fixed monthly price. Therefore, unlike dial-up services, you can remain connected to the internet 24 hours a day without being charged extra or disconnected. …and remember, even though you are permanently connected to the internet you will still be able to receive and make uninterrupted phone calls.kit

Will I need to modify my computer system to change over to broadband?
You will need a wireless network card in your PC. depending on your location you will need a small desktop antenna or a small external panel antenna.

Why do I need to install firewall and anti-virus software?
When you have an always-on connection to the internet it is important to install suitable firewall and anti-virus software. This will help protect you against malicious viruses or the attempted attacks by a hacker, who could break into your computer and access your personal files.

Will I be able to share mp3 files on the internet?
No. File sharing programs such as Kazaa, Limewire, MX are blocked by the satellite ISP firewall.

What happens if my connection stops working, how long will I need to wait for any repair.
The broadband service is provided by a 'not for profit' community group and as such, the group work on a best efforts basis, with no service level agreement.
