The SWRI (Scottish Women’s Rural Institute)
Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes is one of the largest women’s organisations in Scotland and boasts about 20,500 members. Members informally call the organisation the Rural.
There are lots of opportunities to get involved in SWRI: attend classes in crafts, go to cookery demonstrations, go to summer school, join a drama group, sing in a choir, take part in sport, go on a study tour at home or abroad, debate local issues, organise events or simply enjoy the friendship of fellow members at the monthly meeting.
If you have any questions or would like more information on SWRI, please get in touch with us at Headquarters.
The Aims of the SWRI
Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes are groups of women who meet together in centres throughout Scotland.
The aims of the organisation are:
- to advance the education and training of those who live and work in the country or are interested in:
- country life
- home skills
- family welfare
- promote the preservation and development of Scotland’s traditions, rural heritage and culture.
Lochwinnoch SWRIhas been in existence for 58 years and provides the local area with the facilities associated with the national philosophy. New members and guests are always welcome at any of the events. There is a meeting on the third Wednesday of every month from September to April (not December) in the McKillop Hall. There is always an interesting speaker or event going on, perhaps a demonstration or display of crafts or home cooking. The new session starts on Wednesday 21st September with a talk on “Quilting around the World”, and the competitions are a jar of marmalade and flower arrangement in a stemmed glass. We look forward to welcoming lots of new members for the 2011/12 season when you are assured of a warm welcome.
Lochwinnoch SWRI is also a member of the Renfrewshire Federation of SWRI and the members take part in Federation activities, including bowling matches and lunches.
