Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue CentreAndy and Gay Christie began helping injured wild animals many years ago. Their isolated home was an ideal base for the quiet rehabilitation of injured creatures. Today the project has completely taken over their home... and their lives.
Hessilhead has operated for over twenty years as a rescue and rehabilitation centre for injured and abandoned animals and birds. Each year over three thousand casualties are treated and, where possible, released back into the wild. At any one time around two hundred animals and birds are being treated so it is obvious that this is a large and significant centre. The species dealt with range from pigeons to swans and mice to pine martens. Even seals are rescued and treated here. It is one of only a few such centres in Scotland and so takes in ‘patients’ from a wide area of Scotland.
Recent developments include the construction of a swan treatment room, installation of an x-ray and surgery suite and the part-time services of a vet. These advances are necessary so that Hessilhead can continue to do the best for injured wildlife.
