LMEG History

The Lochwinnoch Millennium Events Group was formed early in 1999 by a small group of people who wanted the village to come together to celebrate the new millennium. Regular meetings in the Brown Bull, public meetings in the McKillop and lots of hard work culminated in the memorable millennium street party.... what a night!! Their dream was to have people dancing in the streets and that was just what we did. <pictures to be included soon>

With such a successful event under their belts and with community spirit so high the group went on to organise the village entry in the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom competition. Again, with the support of the village and local businesses the village reached the finals in the competition in their first year. Not bad with a budget of £75 compared to the £30,000 of the winning village! New hanging baskets appeared around the village, gardens were tidied up and people really began to take notice of how the village looked.

What next? The group was aware of the problems being faced by the community... local shops closing down, public transport decaying, local employment problems, youth facilities etc. and decided that a larger project to tackle all these issues would be of benefit to the community. The group also knew that as volunteers they would be unable to tackle a project of that scale alone... the sustainable community project was born.
